Central Election Commission of Georgia has declared moratorium for politicians' media appearances in 50 days before election

On Monday the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia passed the resolution according to which the mass media are not allowed to cover any activities of politicians and political parties in 50 days before the parliamentary election with the only exception for TV translations of pre-election agitation and advertising clips.

The opposition and experts qualify this resolution of the Central Election Commission as a limitation of freedom of mass media and political activity. The authoritative Georgian non-government organization "Free Elections" is inclined to appeal to a court against the decision of the CEC.

Despite journalists' request, Eduard Shevarnadze has not yet given any comment on the CEC's resolution.

November 2 is the date appointed for the parliamentary election in Georgia.
