Gukovo

City in Rostov oblast (province), oblast subordination, 160 km north of Rostov-on-Don. Located in the eastern end of the Donets Ridge. Railway station in the Likhaya - Debaltsevo line. Population (1992 est.) 69.1 thousand, (1959 est.) 53 thousand, (1979 est.) 68.3 thousand.

Founded as a farm on the Gnilusha River by the Cossack centurion Gukov in 1802. Mining settlement of Gukovsky since the late 19th century. Town since 1955. A centre of production of mineral coal in the Eastern Donbass. In the early 90s, Gukovo had a factory of general mechanical rubber goods, production of building materials, enterprises of light industry.
