Gorodovikovsk

Rayon (sector) centre in Kalmykia, 240 km west of Elista. Located in the Kuma-Manych Depression, 60 km of the railway station of Salsk in the Volgograd - Tikhoretsk line. Population (1992 est.) 11.6 thousand, (1979 est.) 12.4 thousand.

Grew out of the settlement of Bashanta. Town since 1971, named after the Soviet commander, Hero of the Soviet Union, O.I. Gorodovikov (1879 - 1960). At the beginning of the 1990s, Gorodovikovsk had a brickworks, a creamery, a cannery and a meat-processing plant.
