Armenian opposition agrees to temporarily not nominate candidates for premier

The opposition, which demanded the resignation of Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, has treated the early parliamentary elections in the country as a compromise that would allow Armenia to get out of political crisis, analysts believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 24, Armenian MPs adopted a decision to lift the martial law regime, introduced in connection with the Karabakh hostilities in the fall of 2020. Pashinyan's resignation is also required for early parliamentary elections. The Premier will do this because he has safeguarded himself by an agreement with the opposition, political analysts have suggested.

Nikol Pashinyan has no other choice but to resign and go to the polls, since the "Movement to Save Motherland" came out against him, as well as many institutions, including the army and the church, Stepan Danielyan, a political analyst, has noted.

In his opinion, the premier's resignation can be viewed as a formal step towards the elections, although another scenario is possible, if the parliament elects a new prime minister from Pashinyan's team.

The June elections are premature and could lead to civil war, Mr Danielyan believes.

Naira Airumyan, the editor of the "Lragir.am", believes that the "Movement to Save Motherland" has failed to achieve its goals, as it demanded Pashinyan's resignation, formation of an interim government and only then – holding the elections.
