Nalchik townspeople lit 101 candles to commemorate Caucasian War victims

On Thursday (May 20), in Nalchik, at the "Tree of Life" monument dedicated to Circassians-victims of the Caucasian War, activists lit 101 candles, one for each year of the war. About a hundred people gathered at the monument.

The Caucasian War (1763-1864) brought the Adyg nations to the brink of extinction. After the war and the mass deportation of Circassians to the Ottoman Empire, about 50,000 people remained in their homeland. Russian authorities refused to recognize Circassian genocide during the war.

Timur Kabardov, a local resident, has noted that modern Circassians adequately perceive their history, understanding the harsh laws of that time.

In the opinion of Aslan Beshto, an activist, people's interest in the events of the Circassians' war against the Russian Empire is growing. He believes that as a result of the war, Circassians lost their territory, language, culture and agricultural traditions.

This year, like in the last one, the events on May 21 will be abridged due to the quarantine.
