Ruslan Totrov, North-Ossetian journalist, treats his criminal prosecution as politically motivated

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has declared Ruslan Totrov, a journalist from North Ossetia, wanted. The day before, he was included into the database of terrorists and extremists run by the "Rosfinmonitoring" (Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service). The journalist himself treats his persecution as politically motivated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this June Totrov filed a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee regarding two court decisions made against him in Russia.

In October 2023, a court in Vladikavkaz fined Totrov for a post about the detention of a girl for reading a book in Ukrainian. The court treated the Totrov's comment on this event as incitement to hatred or enmity.

As the "Avtozaklive" outlet writes, the journalist said that he is currently outside of Russia.

"This is a consistent authorities' policy of silencing not only the undesirable persons, but undesirable journalists and public figures, those people who shape the public opinion and conduct an open dialogue with the audience," Mr Totrov has stated.
